Objective: One of the fields of treatment in psychiatry, especially pediatric psychiatry, is non-drug treatment, and the effect of parent education in behavioral disorders of children and adolescents is one of the most effective treatments in this field. This study investigates the effectiveness of parenting training based on choice theory on the behavioral problems of children aged 7-12 years with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Methods & Materials: In this clinical trial, 32 children aged 7-12 years who referred to clinic of Ibn-e-Sina psychiatric hospital in Mashhad city and they received hyperactivity-attention deficit disorder and oppositional defiant disorder based on DSM-5 and children and adolescent psychiatrist's interview, entered to study. Research instrument included SDQ, Conner's-short form of parents, Arnold's parenting scale and DASS-21. Finally 32 cases divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received parenting training with approach of Glasser's Choice Theory in 5 (ninety minutes) weekly sessions while control group only received non-structured supportive sessions. The evaluations conducted at baseline, the end of sessions and 4 weeks later. Data analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, chi-square, Levene's test and Kolmogrov-Smirnov via SPSS software version 25. Results: The comparison between scores related to Conner's (excluded subscales of psychosomatic, anxiety and social problems), DASS-21, SDQ,parenting scale and SNAP-V Scale were significant between experimental and control groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that parenting training based on choice theory is effective on reducing depression, anxiety and stress among parents of children with hyperactivity-attention deficit disorder and oppositional defiant disorder and behavioral problems and improving skills among these patients.
