The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of schema therapy based on mindfulness on rumination and anxiety in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. The research method was categorized as semi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design involving an experimental group and a control group. The statistical population included all patients with irritable bowel syndrome in Tehran in 2019, from which 30 patients were selected using a convenience sampling method, with 15 assigned to the experimental group and 15 to the control group. The experimental group received training in schema therapy based on mindfulness (10 sessions of 90 minutes each), while the control group did not receive any treatment. To measure the research variables, demographic questionnaires, the Rumination Questionnaire (Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991), and the Anxiety Questionnaire (Beck et al., 1988) were utilized. The data were analyzed using SPSS-V27 software, employing descriptive and inferential tests, including multivariate and univariate analysis of covariance. The results indicated that schema therapy based on mindfulness was effective in reducing rumination in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Additionally, the findings showed that schema therapy based on mindfulness led to a reduction in anxiety among these patients. Therefore, it can be concluded that schema therapy based on mindfulness has a significant effect on reducing rumination and anxiety in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, and it can be utilized as an effective intervention for treating these patients.
