Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy on social adjustment and coping strategies in MS patients in Tehran. Method: According to the research subject and objectives, the research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all patients with MS who referred to the clinics of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran during 1998-1999. A sample of 40 female MS patients in Tehran who were selected by random sampling and then randomly assigned to either experimental (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups. The research tools were Blinksmus Coping Strategies Questionnaire (1981) and Lambert's Adaptive Behavior Questionnaire (1974). The Hatami Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training Package also included a 10-session program that was given to the experimental group for two months. Data analysis method was covariance analysis using SPSS software. Results: The results showed that cognitive-behavioral therapy was effective on social adjustment of MS patients in Tehran (p <0.001). And cognitive-behavioral therapy is effective on coping strategies in MS patients in Tehran (p <0.001). Conclusion: It can be concluded that continuous intervention of cognitive-behavioral therapy program can improve social adjustment status and coping strategies in MS patients.
